In 1997 he was appointed as a Research Assistant Professor at UMC, during which time he earned a reputation in the field of solid-state supramolecular materials chemistry. In 2003 he was appointed as an Associate Professor at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, where he established a world-class laboratory for the investigation of porous supramolecular systems. Barbour was promoted to full Professor in 2005 and in 2016 he was appointed as a Distinguished Professor. He was awarded one of the first 21 South African Research Chair Initiative Chairs (in Nanostructured Functional Materials) in 2006/7 – the Chair has been renewed twice since then and he is currently in the third year of his third and final term. He is interested in the preparation and characterization of new porous materials, as well as the development of in situ techniques for studying solid-gas interactions.
